Shawanda Barbee graduated with a 3.8 GPS in general studies from Southwest Tennessee Community College on May 3. Recently, she was recognized as an outstanding student who endured many obstacle to get and education at Southwest. According to a letter issued by Southwest,

"Shawanda Barbee has faced many difficult challenges over the years trying to complete an education at Southwest. She is a resident of Tipton County. There is no public transportation available for her to get back and forth to school. She has paid enormous fees for transportation, stayed in the Memphis area to be closer to the campus. She felt this would assure that she made it to class each and every session. She lives alone with little support. She is enrolled in classes at the Union, Macon and Whitehaven locations, where she has to ride the bus to get to each location."
