Wagering on high school football games is frowned upon, but if there were point spreads on games tonight involving Brighton, Covington, Munford and Tipton-Rosemark Academy, they would be in the double digits.
Here's a look at which teams are the favorites, which are underdogs and players to watch:
What: Covington (3-0) vs. Brighton (1-2)
When: Tonight at 7:30
Last season: Covington won, 63-30
Local players to watch: Covington - RB Marcus Hayes, RB Jalen Fayne, QB Carson Ruffin, LB Caleb Winfrey, RB Jamarion Dowell; Brighton - QB Nick Johnson, WR Bryce Chaco, WR Tyler Burnett, WR Emmanuel Thurman, DL Dima Barker
Storylines: Brighton's early-season schedule has been brutal. The last two Cardinal games were against teams (Dyersburg, Kirby) which were ranked in the state's top 10, and now they take on the Chargers, who are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A ... Nick Johnson, who has thrown for 480 yards and four TDs, ranks among the top passers in the area ... Young running backs seem to emerge every season (see Marcus Hayes last year) at Covington, and this year is no different. Freshman Jamarion Dowell leads the Chargers with 246 yards and sophomore Jalen Fayne is second with 208 ... Although Covington has beaten Brighton handily the last two seasons and is the favorite tonight, Brighton has won seven of its last 10 games vs. Covington.
What: Munford (2-1) vs. Southwind (1-2)
When: Tonight at 7
Last year: Southwind won, 35-9
Local players to watch: RB Auvic White, DB Kelton Mason, DL Carson Roberson, RB Treveon Hawkins, DL Derek Ross, QB Jaxon O'Neal
Storylines: Munford's running game was explosive and versatile last week, with Jaxon O'Neal (116 yards), Auvic White (105) and Treveon Hawkins (99) each having huge nights. O'Neal, the quarterback, ran the ball five times and scored on four of those carries ... The Jaguars have just one win, the but the losses came against larger schools (Collierville, Center Hill) and the offense has been in high gear, averaging 40 points per game ... It's no secret that Munford will try and control possession and limit Southwind possessions. If the Cougars can do that, they'll have a chance to pull an upset in the Region 8-5A opener for both teams.
What: Tipton-Rosemark (3-0, 1-0) vs. University School of Jackson (2-0, 1-0)
When: Tonight at 7
Last season: Did not play
Local players to watch: RB Mac Fullen, DE J.T. May, RB Tyler Byrd, LB Jordan Artzer, OL Matthew Coats, QB Payne Fullen
Storylines: The Rebels get their first taste of a drastically improved DII-A-West tonight with a trip to Jackson to take on the Bruins, who are ranked No. 1 in the state in DII-A. With both teams undefeated and the Rebels ranked fifth in the state, this is one the biggest games being played tonight ... Rosemark will need to contain USJ quarterback Andrew Smith. In just two games he's already thrown for 446 yards and five TDs. No. 8, Wesley Carlock, is his primary target ... Speaking of passing, Rosemark's offense features a lot of it, unlike previous seasons. Payne Fullen, who took over as the starter in Week 2, has thrown for 373 yards and five TDs. He threw for 232 in a wild win over Jackson Christian last week ... The Bruins, which will dress about twice as many players as TRA, will be the heavy favorite. The last time these two teams played each other, in 2016, USJ won 48-0.
