Tobie Hurd was a force on the defensive line for the Munford High School football team.

The 5-11, 260-pounder could have played college football somewhere, but after he graduated in May he decided to pursue his other love: rugby.

Late last month he signed a rugby scholarship with the University of Memphis.

Hurd was living in Phoenix when he was 16 and a few of his friends were heading to a rugby practice. He decided to join them and took the sport immediately.

When he moved to Tipton County in January of 2018 he joined the Storm, a local rugby club with players from around the area.

"When you go out there you really have to be a teammate," Hurd said when asked to compare football and rugby. "In rugby there's contact with every position. It's non-stop, the game is continuous. You really have to be in shape."
