Project Play opens - June 18, 2003

It was a mad dash to the playground equipment for many children on Friday, June 13, 2003 as Project Play held a grand opening ceremony. The playground, located in Cobb-Parr Memorial Park in Covington, was built by approximately 1,000 community volunteers. Leader files

Following is a look at what made headlines five, 10, 15 and 20 years ago

June 17, 1998 

Covington aldermen pass the budget for the 1998-99 fiscal year, keeping the current tax rate at $1.44 per $100 of assessed valuation. 

June 18, 2003 

Project Play officially opens in Covington’s Cobb-Parr Memorial Park. The donation-funded playground was designed using the ideas of 300 school children and built by a team of 1,000 volunteers.

June 20, 2008  

The Tipton County Sheriff’s Office opens a substation on Centennial Island to increase police presence. The 10 residents between there and Corona Island complain about poachers and thieves. 

June 20, 2013  

Funding was cut for the Tipton County Adult Development Center. The Helen Tucker center in Ripley will maintain responsibility until it is sold.
