Results from last year’s TNReady testing were released this month and Tipton’s schools showed a moderate improvement, said director of instruction Dr. Rebekah Byrd.

According to the state, the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System measures student growth year over year, regardless of whether the student is proficient on the state assessment. In calculating a TVAAS score, a student’s performance is compared relative to the performance of his or her peers who have performed similarly on past assessments.

The district, as a whole, retained its Level 3 ranking.

Levels 4 and 5 mean students tended to show more growth in literacy and numeracy than their peers across the state while Level 3 shows average growth and Levels 1 and 2 show slower growth.

“[It] is interpreted to mean that our students experienced the average/expected level of academic growth over the period of one school year,” she said. “Students in grades 4-8 demonstrated the most growth with a composite Level 5 with the greatest increase in growth shown in numeracy or math.”

Student achievement scores in math and reading/language arts in grades 4-8 show a slight improvement.

Growth at the high school level, she said, reflected the challenges of online testing.

“Students experienced issues with logging into the tests as well as the submission difficulties, all of which were attributed to the state’s testing vendor, Questar.”

Achievement in Algebra II was the highest increase with a slight increase in Chemistry.

“Tipton County Schools have room for improvement in all areas going forward,” she said. “District leadership is working with school-based leadership to ensure that all students across the county experience the expected one-year’s academic growth in 2018-19.”

Here's a breakdown, by school level, for the 2018 scores. All data is derived from TVAAS scores available on the Tennessee Dept. of Education website.

“While we know we still have room to improve, we also want to celebrate the hundreds of schools in Tennessee that showed progress this past year,” Commissioner Candice McQueen said. “Students and teachers are making encouraging strides on both TNReady and in their overall growth, and today’s results point to bright spots across the state where students saw across-the-board success this past year on the state assessment. We want to learn from those places as we also continue to improve.”
