Munford added another baseball signee with Chase Spears going to Jackson, Tennessee to play for Union University. The lefty will be playing under Casey McGehee, a former professional player who wrapped up his first season with the Bulldogs.
“I just feel like it was a great fit for me,” Spears said, “I think it’ll set me up for a very successful future.”
Spears’s game brought tons of success to the Cougars during his four-year stand due to his versatility. He finished his senior season with a battling average of .352 with no errors on defense.
On the mound, he was a perfect 8-0 with an ERA of 1.60 and lowest walks allowed. He only lost five games while being the starting pitcher.
“He was good for us,” Head Coach Scotty Yount stated, “I think he would’ve won 20 games for us if it wasn’t for COVID.”
“That’s going to be hard to replace,” Yount continued, “From defensively to offensively to on the mound there’s no doubt that he was very valuable to us in his time here. He’s definitely not going to be easy to replace.”
More than a dominant force on the field, Yount expressed Spears’s leadership he displayed to his teammates through humility and respect.
“Very humble,” Yount said to sum up the stud’s persona, “Doesn’t need to be in the spotlight. You knew what you were going to get when you put him out there.”
Now a collegiate level player, Spears keeps his same motives and looks to come through the door earning a starting spot.
“Yeah, I’ll just take the same mindset I took into my junior and senior year: just to be great every time I go out there and just do the best I can do every time I go out there,” he said.
As a plus, he will be playing alongside local athlete, Eli Ramsey- a TRA player who signed with Union early in the school year.
“Me and him get along really good. We’ve always known each other,” Spears concluded.
