Cardinals take two at Classic

The Brighton Cardinals faced some tough competition last week at the USA Classic, but held their own, winning two of four games. 

Brighton's offense was on full display in a 16-8 win over Christian County (Ky.) on Friday at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis. 

Ladarius Williams was 4 for 4 with a homer, double and four RBIs and Matt Jacome was 3 for 4 with an RBI. 

Colby Poston, Colton Hatcock and Nathan Newman each had doubles for the Cardinals. Jared Webb doubled twice and drove in three and Newman had three RBIs. 

Brighton (10-8) returns to action Friday at home against Ripley. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

In other games:

• Brighton lost to Lambert (Ga.) last Wednesday at USA Stadium, 6-3. 

Newman tripled and drove in a run for Brighton and Williams and Webb each singled. 

Hathcock took the loss for Brighton, striking out seven over five innings. 

• The Cardinals defeated Marion (Ark.) on Thursday at CBHS, 8-4.

Poston was 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI and Bentley Jones was 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. 

Newman, Dustin Rogers and Hayden Smith each had one hit. Newman struck out seven and allowed six hits over seven innings to earn the win. 

• Goodpasture defeated Brighton 7-2 on Saturday morning at USA Stadium in the tournament finale. 

Williams singled and doubled for Brigton and drove in two runs. A single by Newman was Brighton's only other hit.
